Is Your Facility Ready? New Survey Reveals a Major Compliance Gap in Medical Scale Accessibility

The deadline is approaching. The requirements are clear. And yet, most healthcare facilities aren't ready.

A recent survey conducted by Health o meter® Professional of 68 healthcare professionals revealed a striking reality: the majority of facilities across the country are unprepared — and largely unaware — when it comes to complying with Medical Diagnostic Equipment (MDE) accessibility standards for medical scales. The findings point to a significant and growing compliance gap that facility administrators, clinical staff, and compliance officers can no longer afford to ignore.

What Are MDE Accessibility Requirements?

The U.S. Access Board's MDE Standards establish accessibility requirements for medical diagnostic equipment used in healthcare settings — including examination tables, imaging equipment, and medical scales. For scales specifically, the standards require that equipment be accessible to patients with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs.

These standards are not simply a recommendation. They are tied to federal civil rights law under the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), meaning that failure to comply carries real legal and financial risk for facilities.

What the Survey Found

Most Facilities Are Unaware of the Rules

When asked how familiar they were with MDE accessibility requirements for medical scales, the results were eye-opening:

  • 41% said they were not familiar at all
  • 26% said they were not very familiar
  • Only 13% said they were very familiar and already taking steps

That means 7 out of 10 healthcare professionals surveyed have limited or no knowledge of these requirements — despite the fact that their facilities may already be out of compliance.

Even Fewer Know If Their Equipment Qualifies

Awareness of the rules is one thing. Understanding how they apply to your specific facility is another. When asked about their current compliance status, 64% of respondents said they were unsure whether their equipment qualifies under the MDE standards.

Only 17% reported being fully compliant across their facility.

The Biggest Barrier? Uncertainty — Not Budget

It might be tempting to assume that compliance gaps come down to money. But the survey data tells a different story. When asked about the biggest barrier to addressing compliance:

  • 38% cited uncertainty about which equipment qualifies
  • 22% cited budget constraints
  • 19% said no barrier — they're ready to move forward

The clear message: the primary obstacle isn't cost. It's a lack of clear, accessible information about what the requirements actually mean for day-to-day operations.

What Facilities Need Most

When asked what type of support would be most helpful, respondents were able to select their top two choices:

  • 44% wanted guidance on the regulatory requirements
  • 29% wanted product information and pricing
  • 14% wanted a consultation to review their current equipment and gaps

This reinforces the point: facilities aren't resistant to compliance — they simply need a trusted resource to help them understand where they stand and what to do next.

Why This Matters Now

Patients with disabilities have the same right to accurate, accessible medical care as anyone else. Weight measurement is a fundamental part of clinical care — from medication dosing to chronic disease management to surgical planning. When a scale is inaccessible, the clinical impact extends far beyond a number on a chart.

Beyond patient care, the legal and reputational risk of non-compliance is real. Facilities that have not assessed their equipment and made a good-faith effort toward compliance face exposure under federal civil rights statutes.

The good news? The path forward is clearer than most facilities realize — and Health o meter Professional is here to help.

Where Do You Go From Here?

The survey data points to a straightforward first step: education. Before purchasing decisions are made or budgets are allocated, facilities need to understand what the requirements actually say, how they apply to specific equipment and settings, and what options exist for achieving compliance in a practical, cost-effective way.

If your facility falls into the 83% that isn't fully compliant — or the 64% that simply isn't sure — you're not behind the curve. You're exactly where most facilities are. The key is taking that first step toward clarity.
