Springtime Weather Brings Opportunities to Get Active

March 20 is the first day of spring and most regions are starting to see warmer and dryer weather. The moderate temperatures bring more opportunities to be outdoors and increase your physical activity. Here are some suggestions for ways to use springtime weather to improve your body and mind!

Walk, Walk, Walk
Depending on your physical abilities you can do something as simple as a stroll around the block or a long hike on a nearby nature trail. Take notice of the budding leaves on the trees or new flowers in bloom. It can be a great boost to your mood and immune system to take a walk in the open air using muscles that have been resting all winter.

Yard Clean-Up
If you have your own home, spring is a great time to tidy up the yard and get it ready for summer. You can clean your grill, organize yard toys or wash outdoor lawn furniture. When the summer starts you’ll appreciate having taken the time to get things organized so you can just enjoy your activities.

Start a Garden
Warmer spring weather means the ground is soft enough to dig and there less risk of frost killing your young plants. If you want to start a vegetable garden talk with your local nursery or do online research to determine the best time to plant specific vegetables. You can also enhance your home’s curb appeal by planting colorful flower beds. Gardening is a great way to get active because you can do it at your own pace and physical capabilities.

Spring Cleaning
Cold winter weather limits some of the cleaning we can do around the house. In springtime, you can take advantage of being able to open the windows and let the fresh air ventilate the stale winter indoors. You can also go outside to shake out couch cushions and use a garden hose to wash out garbage cans. Warmer weather also allows you to move your cars to the driveway to be able to clean out your garage. Even though these are just light chores they are great ways to get active and burn calories.

Overall, spring is a great time to assess your health and make changes to your lifestyle. The winter is hard on our bodies with more caloric food choices and less exercise. But as new plants and flowers blossom, you too can start fresh on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
