New EHR Incentive Program Requirements in 2014

Providers that currently are, or intending to, participate in the EHR Incentive Program should be aware of program updates so they are meeting all requirements. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released the final Stage 2 Meaningful Use rules and it included changes made to Stage 1 as well. That change stated that beginning in 2014, all providers, regardless of whether they are in Stage 1 or Stage 2 of meaningful use, will be required to report on the Clinical Quality Measures (CQM) finalized in the Stage 2 rule.

With this new 2014 requirement, Eligible Professionals participating in the EHR Incentive Program must report on 9 of 64 approved CQMs. Eligible Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals must report on 16 of 29 approved CQMs. For Eligible Professionals, the CMS outlined 9 Recommended Core Measures split into Adult and Pediatric categories, which were all developed to help the healthcare community provide high-quality, safe and effective care to the patients.

EHR Incentive Program participants should evaluate their current exam procedures and office equipment to ensure they are able to meet these new requirements in 2014. For example, there is an Adult Core Measure entitled Body Mass Index (BMI) Screening and Follow-Up. To meet this Meaningful Use measure, the practitioner would need to have a way of calculating Body Mass Index which is a ratio between a patient’s weight and height. Having a scale that can calculate weight, height and BMI in just one step would help the practitioner efficiently meet this program requirement.
