In 2009, the U.S. government passed the HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The HITECH Act mandates that by 2014 doctors and hospitals must be using a certified EMR/EHR system, otherwise known as EMR/EHR compliant. EMR compliant also refers to proving “meaningful use” of these EMR systems which can include obtaining and utilizing medical devices that are connected to the EMR system. Those who are not compliant by 2014 will lose federal subsidies and be penalized with diminished Medicare and Medicaid payments.

To help practitioners become EMR compliant and meet meaningful use criteria, Health o meter® Professional developed the Elevate EMRscale. Transfer to the EMR requires the EMR vendor to have an existing interface that accepts these parameters from Welch Allyn devices. When a scale and a Spot Vital Signs LXi are connected, weight is transferred directly to the monitor. An electronic connection between these devices can help eliminate documentation errors by reducing the need for manual entry, while also increasing the speed of recording weight, height and BMI into electronic medical records (EMRs). This automatic transmission of the data into the EMR/EHR system helps practitioners comply with the HITECH Act’s regulation that height, weight and BMI must be electronically stored in a patient’s health record.
